From 1925 to 1927 Matter studied painting at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Geneva, Switzerland. The following two years he studied under Fernand Leger and Amedee Ozenfant at the Academie Moderne in Paris, France. There he became interested in photography and design.
From 1932 to 1936 Herbert worked as a photographer and designer at Studio Deberny & Peignot in Paris, France, while simultaneously freelancing, then he returned to Switzerland. In 1936 he first arrived in the United States, he freelanced, doing many assignments for Harper's Bazaar and Vogue.
From 1946 to 1966 Matter was a design consultant for Knoll International. In 1949 he made a color film on the works of Calder for the Museum of Modern Art in New York City, New York, United States.
In 1952 he was a professor of photography at Yale University in New Haven, United States. He held this position until 1976. In 1954 he designed a work for the New Haven Railroad. He worked there for a year.
In 1958 Herbert worked as a design consultant for the Guggenheim Museum in New York City, New York, United States, and the Museum of Fine Arts in Houston, Texas, United States. He worked there until 1968. Also, he worked on documenting works of Giacometti from 1960 to 1977.
