Hermine Freed received a Bachelor of Arts from Cornell University in Ithaca, New York, in 1961 and a Master of Arts from New York University, New York City, in 1967.
Since 1974 Hermine Freed has been an instructor in video art at the School of Visual Arts in New York. Her former teaching experience includes an associate professorship at the School of the Chicago Art Institute (1976), the position of visiting artist at the University of Illinois in Chicago Circle (1974-1975) and instructor at the 92nd Street Y.M.C.A. (1972-1975), Five Towns Music and Art Foundation (1970-1974), North Shore Community Art Center (1968-1971) and New York University School of Continuing Education (1965-1967).
