Jan Groth was born on November 13, 1938 in Stavanger, Norway. He is a son of Erling Otto Groth and Elise Benthe (Lemaitre) Groth.

Jan Groth was born on November 13, 1938 in Stavanger, Norway. He is a son of Erling Otto Groth and Elise Benthe (Lemaitre) Groth.
During the period from 1956 till 1958, Jan visited several preparatory Art Schools in Denmark. In 1960, he started to attend the tapestry studio "de Uil" in Amsterdam, where he remained till 1961.
In the 1970's, Jan's artistic career started with a series of exhibitions at the legendary Betty Parsons Gallery, and in 1986, he was honoured with a mid-career retrospective at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum.
Since the late 1980's, Groth started to create sculptures, but drawing was still his core medium. During the period from 1982 to 1994, he worked as a teacher at the School of Visual Arts in New York.
During his lifetime, Jan received many commissions, including tapestry for Ministere des Affaires Culturelles, Paris, (1975), tapestry for Skadalen School for the Deaf, Oslo (1981) and others. Currently, he divides his time between Oslo and Dagali, Norway.
Jan received several awards, including Prince Eugen Medal (1991), St. Olav's Medal (1993), Anders Jahre Culture Prize (2002) and others. In 2002, he was made a Commander of the Royal Norwegian Order of St. Olav.
Groth's work, entitled "Komposisjon", was sold for $7,206 at "Modern and Contemporary Art Auction" in 2007.
Also, his works are kept in numerous permenant collections of different museums, including the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York, the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris and others.
Jan is a member of Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts and Bildende Kunstneres Styre.
