Background

Herrington J. Bryce was born on January 8, 1936, in Panama, to Simon and Myra Laporte Bryce.

Education

In 1960 Bryce graduated with honors from Minnesota State University, where he got a Bachelor of Arts. He also earned a Doctor of Philosophy from Syracuse University in 1966. Herrington attended American College in 1984.

Career

Herrington J. Bryce served as a member of the Treasury Board of the State of Virginia, which issues Tax-exempt bonds and oversees cash management and custodial policies for state depositories. From 1980 to 1984 he also served as president of the National Policy Institute, president of the Carlough Corporation from 1984 to 1986, vice president of the National Academy for State and Local Governments, director of Research for the Joint Center for Political Economic Studies.

Bryce was a senior economist at the Urban Institute, a Brookings Economic Policy Fellow, a Fellow at the Institute of Politics at Harvard, and a visiting professor in regional economics and planning at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He taught microeconomic theory and public finance at Clark University in Worcester, Massachusetts, and was director of the program in legal and budget studies at the University of Maryland. He currently teaches courses at the College of William & Mary in nonprofits but mostly in corporate financial strategy and cost management-heavily reflected in this text. He has published extensively and has served on many states, local, and federal government advisory committees.

He is author or editor of several books and articles, including op-ed pieces for the Washington Post, the Wall Street Journal, the New York Times, and the National Employment Weekly. He was the writer-editor of the Not-for-Profit Financial Strategies, a newsletter for CFOs, CEOs, J.D.s, and CPAs published by Harcourt Brace. He has also authored "Financial and Strategic Management for Nonprofit Organizations" and "Planning Smaller Cities." Bryce teaches corporate financial strategy, corporate cost and profit-planning, and nonprofit finance and management.
