Heshen was an official of the Qing Dynasty who was favoured by the Qianlong Emperor. His position at the Ministry of Personnel attracted bribes. The emperors favour meant that Heshen could escape the normal checks оf corruption. The shame of Heshen's corruption came to play when the Qianlong Emperor abdicated in February 1796, he was arrested and his personal wealth seized and counted. Heshen was ordered to commit suicide on 21 February 1799.

Career

Heshen started his official career in 1772 as a low-ranking Imperial Guard. Barely four years later, Heshen was Vise Minister of Revenue, Grand Minister of State, Grand Minister of the Imperial Household and Commander-General of Metropolitan Infantry. In 1782, he become Assistant Grand Secretary and Minister of Personnel, with a portfolio covering the Minister of Personnel, Minister of Revenue and Court of Colonial Affairs.
