He graduated from Moscow State Institute of International Relations of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the USSR (1972).
Since 1972, Gatilov had worked in the system of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs holding different diplomatic positions in the central administrative office and abroad. In 1999-2004, he was First Deputy Permanent Representative of the Russian Federation to the United Nations in New York. Since 2005, he had been a member of the United Nations Secretariat. In April 2008, Gatilov was appointed Director of the Department of International Organizations of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation. He has the rank of Envoy Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the 1st class. He has a good command of the English and Arabic languages.
He is married, and has a daughter.
