He studied German literature at Meiji University.
He became a member of the poets’ group called Myojo (Venus). Wrote gloomy yet ornate poems. Participating in the new theater movement of Kaoru Osanai, he wrote the play “The Fiend Of Pleasure,” which established him as a leading playwright. Wrote modern and historical plays. In 1920, he joined the Ichimuraza Theater and later became president of the Kokumin Shin Gekijo, or the Peopled New Theater.
Elder brother of Mikihiko Nagata, a novelist.
