He became a miner and a traveling actor. In 1912, he made his literary debut with his novel Drops of Rain which was followed by Downfall. A popular writer of love stories, he has written some 500 short stories and novels. After the war, he wrote stories based on life in the Imperial Family, especially emperors' lives. Is a researcher in spiritualism.
Nagata was the brother of fellow writer Nagata Hideo.
