Bailey attended Newnham College. Also, in 1958 she obtained Bachelor of Arts degree at University of Cambridge.
In many of her works, which include realistic and speculative fiction, she tendered a feminist point of view. Bailey worked as a publicist and editor. Also, Hilary wrote a biography of Vera Brittain, and sequels to Jane Eyre and The Turn of the Screw, a novel called Miles and Flora. Hilary Bailey was editing North Sea Island, the sequel to her book Fifty-First State, when her heart stopped.
In 1962 Hilary Bailey and Michael Moorcock, a writer and publisher, got married. In 1978 they divorced. Hilary had three children - Sophie, Kate and Max and three grandchildren - Alex, Tom and Bobby.
