Was elected county clerk of Meigs Company, Ohio, 1860. Lieutenant, 116th Ohio Infantry, 1862-1865. Admitted to bar, 1865.

Began practice at Marietta, O., 1866. Judge Court of Common Pleas, 1883-1897, judge of Circuit Court, 1897-1908, appointed member of commission to revise and consolidate laws of Ohio, 1906. Revision completed and adopted by State.

Delaware Ecumenical Conference, Methodist Episcopal Church, Washington, 1891, General Conference, 1884, 1904, 12. Attended and proposed important change in church polity.
