Tamara Traeder was born on August 28, 1960, in Quincy, Illinois, United States to the family of Clyde H. and Fern Traeder.
Tamara Traeder received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Economics from the University of Missouri at Columbia in 1982. She became a Juris Doctor at the University of Virginia School of Law in 1985. In 2005 she decided to change her specialization and became a Master of Science in Counseling Psychology at the Dominican University of California in 2008.
After completing her doctorate in 1985 Tamara Traeder worked as a Corporate lawyer until 1992. A year after which she for some time worked as a publisher. In this period she became known for collaborating with Carmen Renee Berry on books about women and their relationships. Traeder and Berry first worked together on Girlfriends: Invisible Bonds, Enduring Ties, a collection of interviews in which women celebrate their friendships with other women. Traeder and Berry collected the stories in a variety of ways, including “sending out questionnaires and hosting a few tea parties,” reported Dawn Brooks on the Daily Aztec. Upon publication in 1995, Girlfriends developed into a significant success with the book-buying public. “It built slowly,” Traeder told Jennifer Bojorquez in the Sacramento Bee. “We knew the audience was there, but we didn’t know how big it was.” Traeder and Berry followed Girlfriends with Girlfriends Talk about Men after which they co-wrote several other books.
In 2008 Traeder, never stopping to write books, radically changed the direction of her career turning to Marriage and Family Therapy. After several years of internship at various institutions, she started her own private practice in California, first at Saint Helena relocating later to Concord.
