After studying at the Fourth Municipal Middle School in Tokyo, he went to Manchuria and there led a Bohemian life. Was a reporter on the staff of the Miyako Shimbun in Tokyo (1907-30). Founded the Taishu Bungei, a magazine of popular fiction. Wrote many novels set in the Edo Period and also essays. Noted as an investigator of customs and manners of the Edo gay quarters and Kabuki world.
