Hisashi Kono was one of the leaders of the revolt of February 26,1936, when a group of young military officers tried to put into effect a coup d'etat they had planned to kill several high ranking officials. Kono was assigned the duty of assassinat Viscount Nobuaki Makino at Yugawara Spa, Kanagawa Prefecture. He failed in his attempt, was seriously wounded and committed suicide on March 5.
