(An Essential Road Map for Anyone Leaving a Cult or Church...)
An Essential Road Map for Anyone Leaving a Cult or Church There are 3000 to 5000 cults in America alone and many more worldwide--although few groups admit to being cults. For anyone leaving a church or one of these cults, the journey out can be fraught with landmines. Leaving often means giving up not just membership in a group, but also a world view, a community of friends, a mission, and even a daily routine. Although many thousands of people leave such groups each year, helpful resources are surprisingly scarce. Few therapists have been trained to support former cult members. Most people on the outside simply don't understand how easy it is to get into a cult, or how difficult to get out. The Leave the Cult Handbook offers first aid to those who want to untangle the confusion about what really went on in their group and who need to figure out where they're headed now. Find Clarity and Solace The Leave the Cult Handbook is written with an insider's eye. Author Hiyaguha Cohen spent 23 years in a cult before going through the difficult process of leaving, and she subsequently completed extensive doctoral research on how to help others in the same boat. The Leave the Cult Handbook will help you to explore the definition of a cult, the behavior of cult leaders, and the subtleties of cult mind control. Through questions for reflection, you'll discover how your group measured up in all these areas so that you can end any confusion about whether your group was a true path. You'll assess what your group gave you and what it took away. Finally, you'll look toward how you can begin the healing process. You'll find plenty of resources to help you get started. The Dilemma Addressed At one time, the group or church you're thinking of leaving probably seemed like the answer. You felt lucky to be a member and so you devoted your time, your resources, and your talents to it. And then, something went wrong. You started to question things and to withdraw. Becoming disillusioned with a group that you once embraced with your whole heart can make you feel as if the earth has shifted under your feet. Everything you believed gets thrown into question, and depending on your level of involvement, the routines and activities that once structured your life no longer work; friends and family members may cut ties with you. The discrepancy between what you once believed and felt, compared to what you now experience may feel intolerable. The Leave the Cult Handbook offers a bridge to help you begin to make peace with the dichotomy between your old universe and your new reality. Practical, Down-to-Earth Format The Leave the Cult Handbook is full of open-ended questions for you to consider. These questions will help you to separate reality from your emotion so that you can get a clear-sighted view of your group based on your own value system. Throughout the book, you'll find places to reflect on your own experience so that the material becomes useful and personalized. You'll also find practical advice and even links to resources to help you get your life back. Learn from heroic archetypes in Star Trek how to bring forward the hero within yourself. Spock, Kirk, Captain Picard, Worf, and the other Star Trek characters from Star Trek Classic, The Next Generation, Deep Space Nine, and Voyager provide sterling role models to help us deal with life challenges. The Star Trek Factor offers something different from most other self-help books—an immediate, practical, and concrete approach to life that actually can help you finally achieve those things that you’ve been dreaming about. This book will also help you get through hard times, starting today, while becoming a better person in the process. Inspiration from the Starship Enterprise The crew of the Starship Enterprise triumphs over challenges that range from managing every day emotions to reacting to terrorism. In every case, the characters act like heroes. The Star Trek Factor helps you to look at how these heroes in Star Trek handle the same sorts of issues you deal with every day, so that you can take inspiration and instruction from their example. Live Links to Star Trek Episodes You'll find live links embedded throughout the book that take you directly to Star Trek episodes and clips that will help you deal with particular challenges. If you want to learn how to handle someone who treats you with hostility, for instance, you'll find a step-by-step exercise that begins with watching the TNG episode, "Ensign Ro." In that episode, Guinan overcomes Ensign Ro's resistance to becoming friends. You'll analyze the episode and learn from it. Star Trek Movies And All the Series The Star Trek Factor draws on Star Trek movies as well as on all the Star Trek series. If you were a fan of TNG, DS9, Star Trek Voyager, or the Star Trek original series, you'll find references to your favorite episodes and characters within. Star Trek Heroes in Four Varieties In Star Trek, there are four distinctly different types of heroes, and it takes all four types to keep the Starship Enterprise on course. Kirk and Jean-Luc Picard provide inspirational leadership. Spock is the exemplary analyst, maintaining objectivity and controlling his impulses at all times. Worf is always the fearless warrior, acting with relentless honor and dignity. Deanna Troi sees beneath the surface and never lets her compassion waver, no matter what gets thrown at her. These four character types—Leaders, Analysts, Warriors, and Communicators together steer the Enterprise through one crisis after another, always pulling through because of seamless teamwork. Why Use Fictional Heroes? From whom else can we learn how to be strong, brave, compassionate, wise, logical, and fair all at the same time? These are the days of debunking, when our political, cultural and religious Leaders too often are caught with pants down—but still, we crave role models to learn from. The irony is that the fictional heroes in Star Trek show us how to negotiate life and become strong in a way that few real life heroes can. Though the Star Trek characters are fictional, they represent heroic qualities that resonate in a profound way. They are heroes in a full, non-blemished sense, embodying heroic qualities with such purity that we can finally learn what those qualities are, and by example, how to embody them. The Star Trek Factor Mission The Star Trek Factor will help you change from an occasional, closet hero to a full-fledged Starfleet-ready champion. All you need to do is take some lessons from the Starfleet crews, and then put into practice what you learn. You'll definitely succeed, not only because you'll have learned from the best teachers in the universe, but also because you already have all the ingredients of heroism within you.

Quotations: "My writing draws heavily on my background in psychology, and I usually choose related subjects— careers, self-help, spirituality. I always imagine that I am writing to a particular person, and I try to write about things what will inspire, rather than frighten or discourage people. I love to entertain, as well, and I revere Dave Barry. Others who influenced my writing include my former boss, the renowned biostatistician Frederick Mosteller, who ripped apart every report I handed him, because I tended toward the wordy. I was also influenced by the mystic poet Sri Chinmoy, who says more in a simple four-line poem than I manage to say in a ten-page story. Simplicity and clarity in writing inspire me greatly. I have observed that such qualities develop only when one achieves true inner wisdom and clarity of mind."
She married Sudheya David Rosenberg (a small business consultant) in 1980.
