This book provides a lucid account of economic policy in West Germany from the late 1940s up to the present, including the new challenges presented by the unification of the two German states in 1990. The authors describe and evaluate the major policy controversies and decisions, and place particular emphasis on the characteristically German institutions of policy counseling and their role in policy formation.

Schmieding, Holger was born on January 10, 1958 in Papenburg, Lower Saxony, Germany. Son of Lothar and Anneliese (Lechtenberg) Schmieding.
Vordiplom, University Munich, 1980. Diploma in Economics, University Kiel, Germany, 1984. Doctor in Social Sciences, University Kiel, Germany, 1992.
Before joining Berenberg, he was a Senior Economic Advisor to the International Monetary Fund, a Senior Strategist at the Bank of America and worked for Merrill Lynch, based in Washington District of Columbia, London and Frankfurt. The Financial Times Deutschland placed him at the top of the list of 50 analysts for the proven accuracy of his forecasts over the last six years in 2007. He worked as a journalist 1976-1978 and studied economics in Munich, London and Kiel, obtaining a doctorate in economics at the University of Kiel with a dissertation on the integration of central and eastern European countries in the western European economy.
He has also co-authored a book on German economic history since 1948, with Herbert Giersch and Karl-Heinz Paque.
