Hon-Imbo Shusai

Background

Hon-Imbo Shusai was born in 1874.

Education

He was a disciple of both Shuho and Shuei, the 18th and 19th hon-imbo. After Shugen, the 20th hon-imbo, retired (1908) he succeeded to the title and was promoted to the eighth grade.

Achievements

• He was a bold player who was also skillful in close fights. He was at the height of his fame when he defeated Karigane, a holder of the seventh rank, in one of the most famous contests in modern times. In 1914, he received the additional title of meijin, or master.
