She wed Javed Akhtar on 21 March 1972, but the marriage ended in divorce. They have two children. Honey Irani is the maternal aunt of choreographer and director Farah Khan and director/host Sajid Khan.
Her sister Daisy Irani was a famous child artist of the 1950s/60s.
Honey Irani began her Bollywood career as a child actress with roles in films like Chirag Kahaan Roshni Kahaan and Bombay Ka Chor. She has acted in over 72 films.
After her divorce she started doing embroidery on sarees to support her family. Though she has been writing short stories all this while, she never shared them.
She told the story idea of Aaina (1993) to Pam Chopra,wife of Yash Chopra for a television series but it was selected by Yash Chopra for a film.
Yash Chopra also asked her to develop a story idea, which went on to become her debut as a screenwriter, Lamhe (1991), starring Sridevi. Pyaar Hai in 2001.
