Background
Hosokawa was born in 1720. Daimyd. Son of Nobunori, lord oi Kumamoto, Kyushu. Succeeded his father as lord of the 540,000-koku clan (1747) and was granted the title of Etcliu-no- kamif or Lord of Etchu Province.

He ruled over his territory for 39 years with wisdom and became known as one of the finest feudal lords. Encouraged industry and stocked rice crops for emergencies. In the Great Famine of the Temmei Era (1784),there was no one who starved in his province thanks to his wise measures. A man of self-discipline and thrify habits, he meted out light punishments to criminals, founded schools ana loved his people. Was respected as Gmdaiko, or Lord of the Silver Pavilion.
