Hosui Matsumoto was born in 1893 in Ehime, Japan.
He graduated from Meiji Pharmaceutical School in 1910.
Established himself as calligrapher by receiving gold medal for work exhibited at Tokyo Exposition Commemorating Armistice in 1922. He was good in every style of writing but is at his best in Kaisho (the square or standard style of Chinese writing). With friends organized Toho Shodokai (The Eastern Calligraphic Society). With establishment of Goka (Calligraphy Section) within Nitten (The Japan Arts Exhibition) became judge of that section and was nominated councilor of Nitten. He edited magazine Shokai (The Sea of Calligraphy) in 1948.
