(This thought-provoking examination of crime and criminolo...)
This thought-provoking examination of crime and criminological theory takes a direct approach to a question that often confuses and frustrates students why do people commit crimes? UNDERSTANDING CRIME begins with an overview of the key elements of the study of crime and criminology, including law, public policy, research literature, and the philosophical origins of crime theories. These theories, based in biology, psychology, and sociology, are then broken down to their basic elements and causal processes in order to be explored. The authors examine the practical implications and applications each theory has on the administration of justice. In conclusion, the text looks at the future of crime theory by speculating whether or not new research designs, theories, and paradigms are needed. With a new modular format, this text can be customized for any teaching or learning style.

(Faculty praised each of the previous six editions of Howa...)
Faculty praised each of the previous six editions of Howard Abadinsky's clear, comprehensive overview of the US legal system. His latest edition Law, Courts, and Justice in America (previously Law and Justice) represents a refined, updated synthesis of the complex, fluid justice system in the United States. Part I (Law) describes the history of the US justice system and the emergence of law schools; the realities of a law school education; and the current state of the legal profession for both women and men. Part II (Courts) unravels the structure of federal and state court systems, delineating differences between constitutional and legislative courts and between trial and appellate courts; the structure and purpose of appellate courts; and the Supreme Court, noting variations in the interpretation of statutes, the Constitution, and the original intent of legislators; and the roles of judges, prosecutors, and attorneys. Part III (Justice) demystifies the criminal, civil, and juvenile judicial processes; plea-bargaining and the controversies surrounding it; and adjudication options outside of traditional, adversarial legal venues. Throughout, landmark cases, important historical events, illustrative examples, and boxed items highlight or expand chapter content. Not-for-sale instructor resource material available to college and university faculty only; contact publisher directly.

(From the book's Preface by the author: "The first edition...)
From the book's Preface by the author: "The first edition of this book began shortly after I received an adjunct appointment at St. John's University. I was a Senior Parole Officer for the New York State Division of Parole and this was my first formal teaching position. I attempted to locate a textbook on probation and parole and was faced with two alternatives: a well-written text by a former (deceased) Division of Parole executive, which was out-of-date, or a 'reader' which articles that were often out-dated or on a graduate level. Instead, I selected a book on corrections and began to collect materials to supplement the text. The 'supplement' became a manuscript and the first edition of this book.... for the past three years, I have been teaching courses on probation and parole while working on a second edition. The result is this book which has been developed and refined as a teaching instrument for college educators."

Written from an insider’s view, this text provides an up-to-date and comprehensive examination of a field that is undergoing significant change. Probation and Parole: Theory and Practice, 12e looks at the history of the field, how it moved from a focus on treatment/rehabilitation and the indeterminate sentence, toward a model based on control/law enforcement and the determinate sentence. It offers a logical, student-friendly approach. Written by a former community corrections professional, the author provides an insider’s view on how these changes affected the roles and responsibilities of probation and parole officers. In contrast to competing texts, the author weaves his experience with the practices of probation and parole agencies throughout the United States to provide a realistic, state-of-the-art view of the field. The use of cognitive behavior therapy and motivation interviewing, “broken windows”/community-based supervision, and the importance of evidence-based practice are examined. Teaching and Learning Experience This book will help students gain an insider’s view of the rapidly changing field of community corrections/probation and parole. It provides: • Realistic insider’s view of the field: Drawn from the author's vast experience as a retired community corrections professional with the NYS Division of Parole, as well as his academic credentials (MSW, PhD) • Relevant psychological and sociological theory: Applies social science theory to the practicalities of community corrections • Learner-focused, “active learning” with strong pedagogical support: Reinforces chapter information to ensure mastery, and offers extensive pedagogical support for more effective study

The author . . . focuses upon two elite categories of the criminal 'underworld'--the jewel thief and the 'wise guy'. . . . The author's well-documented readable work lends support to the contention that research in this area of crime problem is difficult, although feasible, and in the process fills a lacuna in the literature relative to elite categories of crime.
