Howard Comfort was born on June 4, 1904, in Haverford, Pennsylvania, United States. His family where Quakers.
Comfort was an active cricket player in his youth.
Comfort obtained his doctoral degree in classics from Princeton University in 1931 and was also, at the same time, working on his PhD.
Comfort worked at Haverford College and eventually became the professor of classics. He retiring from this position in 1969.
He served as the cultural attache at the American embassies in Italy and Switzerland. He wrote numerous essays for the American Journal of Archaeology and also wrote three books which were his lifetime's observations on Roman archaeology.
He was a member of many scholarly societies in antiquities and archaeology.
