Howard Unger studied painting and drawing at the Art Students League in New York City in 1960-1961. He received a Bachelor of Fine Arts (1966) and a Master of Arts (1968) in Graphic Design from Kent State University, Kent, Ohio, then took a Master of Education (1972) from Teachers College, Columbia University, New York City.
In 1975-1976 Howard Unger studied photography at the School of Visual Arts in New York City and studied holography in 1976 at the New York Institute of Holography. In 1978 Howard Unger attended a postdoctoral seminar on educational administration at Teachers College.
Howard Unger taught educational technology and was a photography coordinator at Teachers College (since 1976) and was an associate professor in visual communications technology at Ocean County College, Toms River, New Jersey. Howard Unger was a photographic critic for the Village Voice (1976-1977) and a photography columnist for SoHo Weekly News (1977-1978). He directed the 1974 16mm color film The Life of V. I. Lenin as portrayed by Soviet Artists.
