Background

Sherman, Hoyt was born on November 1, 1827 in Lancaster, Ohio, United States. Son of Charles R. and Mary (Hoyt) S., brother General World Trade and Senator John Sherman.

Education

Graduate Howes Academy, Lancaster, O., 1842. Studied law, 1848-1850, admitted to practice by Iowa Supreme Court, 1850.

Career

In early life learned printer’s trade. Followed it until 1847 in office of Cincinnati Gazette. Postmaster Des Moines, 1849-1853.

Clerk of court 2 terms. Major and paymaster, 1861-1864. Aided in establishing a leading life insurance company for many years.

Member 11th general assembly Iowa, 1865-1866. Author of statute regulating life insurance companies, and president Equitable Life of Iowa, 1874-1888.
