Hugh Haynie started his career as a cartoonist in 1958 at the Louisville Courier-Journal (now The Courier-Journal). He held this post until his retirement in 1996. He also served in the United States Coast Guard during the end of World War II and the Korean War. He also worked for a number of other publications in the south, including the Greensboro Daily News and the Atlanta Journal, both during the 1950s. In 1974 he published a book of his cartoons titled Hugh Haynie: Perspective.
