Excerpt from Thirteen Homilies of St. Augustine on St. John XIV: In Ioh; Ev; Tractatus LXVII LXXIX, With Translation and Notes The present edition - the only English one - has been prepared with special regard to the Preliminary Examination of Candidates for Holy Orders, in which these thirteen Homilies form the Latin subject for the years 1901, 1902. The notes are intended to meet the requirements of the ordinary candidate for that examination, and reference is only made to such books as may reasonably be supposed to be within his reach. It did not seem necessary to re-tell the familiar story of St Augustine in literary form, but the "Introductory Notes" give concisely the main facts of his life, and his characteristics as a teacher and preacher. An English translation has been added, both for the sake of increasing the practical usefulness of the work, and also because it is in many ways the most convenient and compendious form of commentary on small grammatical points with which it is undesirable to burden the notes.
