Ewing, Hugh Boyle was born on October 31, 1826 in Lancaster, Ohio, United States. Son of Thomas Ewing.

Education

Educated by private tutor and at United States Military Academy. Went to California, 1849, on expedition sent by his father (then Secretary of the Interior) to the high Sierras to rescue emigrants from snows. Returned, 1852. Practiced law, St. Louis, 1854-1856, Leavenworth, Kansas, 1856-1858.

In charge of salt works in Ohio, 1858-1861.

Career

Served through war, 1861-1865, major to brigadier general, and brevetted major general. Commanded brigade at Antietam and Vicksburg, and a division at Chickamauga, United States minister to The Hague, 1866-1870. Retired. Home: Lancaster, O.
