In charge of salt works in Ohio, 1858-1861.
Served through war, 1861-1865, major to brigadier general, and brevetted major general. Commanded brigade at Antietam and Vicksburg, and a division at Chickamauga, United States minister to The Hague, 1866-1870. Retired. Home: Lancaster, O.
