Riesenfeld, Hugo was born on January 26, 1885 in Vienna, Austria. Son of Leopold and Sofie (Grunwald) Riesenfeld.


Educated Conservatory of Music. Vienna, and University of Vienna.


1 daughter, Janet. Formerly connected with Imperial Opera House, Vienna. Came to the United States, 1907. Concertmeister Manhattan Opera County, New York City, 1907-1911.

Conductor for Klaw & Erlanger 3 seasons. Concertmeister and conductor, Century Opera Company, 1915. Managing director Rialto, Rivoli and Criterion theatres, New York, 1917-1925 (resigned).

Managing director Colony Theatre, New York, 1927. General musical director United Artists Studio, Hollywood, California, 1928-1930. Wrote: Chopin’s Dances (ballet), produced Vienna, 1905.

The Merry Martyr (comic opera), produced Boston, 1913. Betty Be Good, musical comedy, produced 1921. Symphonic Poem; overture, suit, songs.
