(The relation of mind and body is one of the central probl...)
The relation of mind and body is one of the central problems of post- Cartesian times. It has precluded a unified theory of the positive sciences and prevented a satisfactory notion of man's psychophysical unity. Gen- erally it has been treated as a problem of causality and solutions have been sought in various schemata of etiological relations. Proposals have ranged from that of reciprocal action between two substances and two causal streams to a reduction of all phenomena to a single causal stream involving a single class of substances. This investigatiDn will abandDn such schemata and attempt to' start afresh. It will analyze the relation Df strata Df meaning invDlved and will be Dnly tangentially concerned with the causal relatiDns Df mind and body. This investigation will view the relation Df mind and body no lDnger as the associatiDn Df twO' substances, twO' things, but as the integratiDn Df two levels of conceptual richness. This is a move from hypostatization, reification, to' categorializatiO'n - a mDve from the O'pacity Df things to' the relative lucidity Df their significance. It recognizes that philO'SOphy seeks not new facts about being but rather a way Df understanding the integratiDn Df widely diverse domains Df facts. Here the gDal is the expla- natiDn of the unity Df being, specifically the being of mind and bDdy, in terms Df thDught - that fDr which being has significance and that for which incongruities of significance appear as a problem.

(This new, thoroughly recast Second Edition has been accla...)
This new, thoroughly recast Second Edition has been acclaimed as "the most important book written since the beginning of that strange project called bioethics" (Stanley Hauerwas, Duke University). Its philosophical exploration of the foundations of secular bioethics has been substantially expanded. The book challenges the values of much of contemporary bioethics and health care policy by confronting their failure to secure the moral norms they seek to apply. The nature of health and disease, the definition of death, the morality of abortion, infanticide, euthanasia, physician-assisted suicide, germline genetic engineering, triage decisions and distributive justice in health care are all addressed within an integrated reconsideration of bioethics as a whole. New material has been added regarding social justice, health care reform and environmental ethics. The very possibility and meaning of a secular bioethics are re-explored.

(Bioethics is vitally important in our day because it repr...)
Bioethics is vitally important in our day because it represents the critical expression of interest in the proper use of medical science to provide health care. Secular humanism is important because it is a central factor in constructing a common morality that does not make special appeal to such things as religious assumptions. The argument of this book, therefore, will be of profound interest to all who are concerned for the well-being of humanity in today's world. Imagine, the author says, Roman Catholics and committed atheists disputing over proper abortion policies. Imagine individuals who wish to organize a for-profit surrogate mother service, confronting individuals who view such endeavors as exploitation of women. To what moral premise do they appeal? Are power and influence the deciding factors, or is it possible to establish certain principles to which all may appeal? In answer, Professor Engelhardt examines the various meanings of secularity and humanism, clearly showing how complex they are. Alongside this he demonstrates the diversity of bioethics and the problems of laying a foundation for it. Based on these considerations, he identifies which ways forward are the most promising. The urgency of the task is clear. New biomedical possibilities are surfacing at the very time that demands to contain health care costs pose difficult ethical problems.

(iInnovation and the Pharmaceutical Industry: Critical Ref...)
iInnovation and the Pharmaceutical Industry: Critical Reflections on the Virtues of Profit examines the central role of profit in the development of pharmaceuticals, medical devices, and health care generally. Recent efforts to understand this role have often underestimated and even dismissed its importance, arguing for its replacement by other means and mechanisms. However, as the essays in this volume attest, it would be impossible to account adequately for the range of pharmaceuticals and medical devices that have become part of everyday medicine without recognizing that the depth and scope of innovations are tied not simply to altruism, a concern for the common good, or the pursuit of knowledge for its own sake, but crucially to the pursuit of private good and of individual profit. Balancing a concern for theory and practice, the analyses and evaluations provided in these essays touch directly on many of the most heated and important debates in pharmaceutical ethics, such as profit margins, corporate social responsibility, drug advertising, litigation, patents, and parallel trade. Reflecting critically on the problems and prospects of medical innovation, they invite a rethinking of the foundations of the bioethics and business ethics of the pharmaceutical and medical device industries by focusing on the long-term impact of policy decisions for human health and well-being.
