Hyoemon Kanda was born in Harima, Ilyogo Prefecture, with the name Taneyasu and pseudonym Shoun.
Hyoemon Kanda began his career as accountant to the Ou Expedition (1868). Later he established a school on western styles (1871) and took active part in enlarging the port of Kobe. He was President of Chamber of Commerce (1878) and also Speaker of Kobe City Assembly.
