Iain G. Macniven was a lawyer based in Glasgow, Scotland, who was admitted to the bar in Scotland in 1979 and became a partner of Maclay Murray & Spens, a commercial law firm founded in Glasgow in 1871. He specialised in commercial property and leases and wrote on those subjects for the Law Society of Scotland's journal.
Background
Iain G. Macniven's documented career is rooted in Glasgow, the city where he was admitted to practise and where his firm was based. The city's legal profession has a long institutional history, and the Royal Faculty of Procurators in Glasgow was incorporated before 1668 to support and regulate the procurators of the Commissary Court of Glasgow. Solicitors practising in Scotland therefore work within a legal system built on Scots law, which is distinct from the law of England and Wales.
Education
Macniven's documented degrees are a Master of Arts and a Bachelor of Laws. In Scotland, an accredited LLB is the usual first step for those entering the solicitor or advocate branches of the legal profession, and the Law Society of Scotland accredits such law degrees.
Career
Macniven was admitted to the bar in Scotland in 1979. He later became a partner of Maclay Murray & Spens, a firm founded in Glasgow in 1871 by David Maclay, David Murray and John Spens as the first law practice in Scotland with a specifically commercial focus. By the time the firm announced a merger with the global firm Dentons in 2017, it had offices in Aberdeen, Edinburgh, Glasgow and London.
His commercial property practice covered property development and finance, leases and leasing, and regeneration and public sector work. By 2007 he had specialised in commercial property work for more than twenty-five years.
He also contributed articles to the Law Society of Scotland's journal, including a 2006 piece concerning the Property Standardisation Group, a 2007 article on leases, and a 2011 article marking the group's tenth year. He later became a retired partner of the firm and held office as a notary public.

Membership
Macniven is a member of the Royal Faculty of Procurators in Glasgow, one of the oldest legal societies in the United Kingdom, which was incorporated before 1668. Today the Faculty serves lawyers in Glasgow and West Central Scotland by providing a large law library, a continuing professional development programme, the services of an auditor and a city-centre venue.
The Property Standardisation Group was established in June 2001 by transactional partners from two of four Scottish firms, with senior professional support lawyers from the other two. Its founders had discussed the idea during a Scottish Law Commission session on reform of the law on irritancy of leases. Macniven was one of the group's four representatives by 2011.
