Ian Hodgetts is an Australian lawyer based in Brisbane, Queensland, who worked as a partner of the law firm Feez Ruthning. He was admitted to the bar in Queensland in 1972 after studying at the University of Queensland, and he is also a co-author of Planning and Development Queensland, a loose-leaf work on the state's planning law.
Education
Hodgetts studied at the University of Queensland, where his documented qualifications are a Bachelor of Commerce and a Bachelor of Laws. The university was founded in Brisbane in 1909 as the first university in Queensland, and it became the state's principal institution for the university-level training of its lawyers and business graduates during the decades of Hodgetts's studies.
He was admitted to the bar in Queensland in 1972, marking the point at which his legal education led into the state's legal profession.
Career
Hodgetts's documented professional career was centred in Brisbane, where he worked as a partner of Feez Ruthning. The firm's own history, which covers the period to 1946, identifies earlier Brisbane practices among its predecessors. One of these was the partnership of MacPherson Miskin & Feez, which Arthur Feez joined after moving to Brisbane from Cairns. In 2002 the firm's structure, as described in a Queensland Court of Appeal decision on payroll tax, included both equity partners and salaried partners.
Hodgetts is named as a co-author of Planning and Development Queensland, a three-volume loose-leaf work published by Lawbook Co. in Pyrmont, New South Wales, in 2001, with Alan Stuart Fogg and Rosanne Meurling. The Planning Act 2016 (Qld) is now the principal Queensland law regulating planning and development, which places the subject of the work within the state's ongoing planning framework. Thomson Reuters update issues from 2019 and 2021 continued to list Fogg, Meurling and Hodgetts as the authors of the work.
