Ian graduated from King’s College, London with a B.D. in 1985. He also received from Queen’s College, Cambridge, his M.Litt. in 1990. Later, he earned his Ph.D. from the University of Exeter in 1994.
Ian worked as a lecturer in theology at the University of Exeter, Exeter, England, from 1989 to 1996. He was a director and member of council of Advertising Standards Authority since 1993. Markham also worked at Liverpool Hope University, Liverpool, England, as a professor of theology since 1996. He was appointed Dean and President of Virginia Theological Seminary (VTS) in August 2007. He serves as priest associate at St. Paul’s Church in Alexandria.
Ian was ordained a priest in the Episcopal Church in 2007. Before being called to VTS, Markham served as Dean and Professor of Theology and Ethics at Hartford Seminary in Connecticut, and as Visiting Professor of Globalization, Ethics, and Islam at Leeds Metropolitan University in the United Kingdom. Ian married Lesley Patricia Dunn on July 4, 1987. The couple has a child, Luke Stephen Austin.
