Ibuse was born in 1898, in Hiroshima, Japan.
Studied at Waseda University and Japan Pine Arts School.
He began to be noticed for his short stories from about 1928. Received the Naoki Literary Prize for his uAd- ventures of John Manjird^ (1938). His stories are set in plebeian life and written with humor. After the Pacific War, his “Doctor Sees No Patients Today”,a story descriptive of postwar city life, was awarded the Yomiuri Literary Prize.
