Ichien Dogyo

Background

Ichien Dogyo was born in Kamakura, he was raised by a relative in Hitachi (Ibaraki Prefecture) after his father died in his childhood.

Career

Became a priest at the age of 18, studied Abhidharmakosa under Priest Koen and the Hokke Sect doctrine under Hosshin. Also studied esoteric Buddhism in Nara. Although he was asked to become the chief priest of the Tofukuji Temple, he declined it.
