Yuasa Ichiro was born in Gumma Prefecture in 1868.
After graduating from Doshisha College in Kyoto, proceeded to Tokyo to study Western-style painting under Hosui Yamamoto and Kiyoteru Kuroda and then went on to graduate from Tokyo Academy of Fine Arts (1898).
Shortly after proceeded to Europe and studied under Velasquez in Italy (1905-09). Returning home helped in founding Nika Art Institute. Came into prominence with his work Gyofu-banki (a fishing scene) (1895). Had a simple style and was also skilled in water colors. Made several facsimiles of Velasquez’s masterpieces.
