On February 5, 2016, Ashurbeyli was awarded the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization Medal for contributions to the development of nanoscience and nanotechnologies during a ceremony held at United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization headquarters, Paris.
