Ii Naotaka

Background

Ii Naotaka was born in 1590. He was the second son of Naomasa. Because his mother was of humble origin, his early years were unhappy.

Career

He participated in the Winter Campaign in Osaka in 1614 (war between the Toku- gawa and Toyotomis) in place of his elder brother, Naokatsu. After the war, he became head of the Ii family by order ot Shogun Hidetada Tokugawa and given the castle in Hikone.

Achievements

• It is said he cut off the heads of 315 Toyotomi soldiers in the Summer Campaign in Osaka, in 1615. Among the enemy chieftains he killed was Shigenari Kimura, noted warrior. For his exploit, Naokata had his fief increased by 300,0 koku.
