The eldest son of Yoritomo Minamoto.
The eldest son of Yoritomo Minamoto.
Earlier known as Juman. Succeeded to his father estate at an early age and being of an obstinate nature did whatever he pleased in spite of his mother's steady influence. Later he even spurned his officials and became bold enough to order the execution of Kagetoki Kajiwara. Was proclaimed Shogun (1202) but soon after fell ill. Prime Minister Tokimasa Hojo took advantage of this and divided his estate into two, giving 28 provinces in Kanto district to one brother Ichiman and 38 provinces in Kansai district to another Semman (later Snogun Sanetomo). Yoriie was enraged at this and ordered Yoshikazu Hiki to attack Hojo. In the ensuing battle Yoshikazu and Ichiman were killed, Yoriie was deposed and forced to enter a monastery at Shuzenji (Shizuoka Prefecture) where he was later killed.
