Ikarimaru Watanabe (Original personal name: Shigeto) was born in 1837 in Nakatsu (Oita Prefecture), Japan.
Ikarimaru Watanabe attended the private school Seikyudo. Later, in 1853 he studied at the Hakugan Academy.
After mastering the Chinese classics and fencing founded Doseikan (private school) and taught there. He advocated piety and reverence for the Emperor, having been much influenced by the writings of Atsutane Hirata. Later was appointed lecturer: at Kogakusho (school of national classics) (1869), then professor at Daigakko (predecessor of Tokyo University) and also junior priest at Katori Shrine in Chiba Prefecture. After resigning from above restored Dōseikan in Tokyo and confined himself to writing and teaching.
