Ikunoshin Kadono was born in Mie Prefecture in a family which serviced the Inagaki clan.

Ikunoshin Kadono learnt English at the Keio Gijuku under the then English Minister Sir H.S. Parkes.
Through Teacher's recommendations was able to become (1872) a teacher at the same school. His ability was soon spotted by Taisuke Itagaki and Ikunoshin Kadono was appointed (1878) vice-principal of the Ky- shi-sha school at Tosa, Kochi Prefecture. Later, he returned to the Keio Gijuku and helped Yukichi Fukuzawa to put it on its feet. After the death of Fukuzawa Ikunoshin Kadono became vice-president of the school and paved the way for raising its status to a university. He left the education field (1904) and entered business. He is the founder of the Chiyoda Life & Fire Insurance Company.
