Until World War 1 teacher. 1914 drafted into Russian Army. Company commander, Rumanian Front.
1917 chairman. Executive Committee, Tiraspol’ Soviet. Formed and commanded Tiraspol’ Red Guard unit From 1918 in Red Army.
1919-1920 chief of staff, Yakir’s 45th Infantry Division. 1920-1921 commander, 45th Infantry Division. Then assistant commander, Kiev Military district.
1925-1928 commander, 8th, then 14th Infantry Corps, Ukraine Military district. 1928-1931 chief, Red Army Command Board. 1931-1935 deputy commander, Leningrad Military district.
1935-1937 commander, Ural Military district. 1934-1947 member, Military Council, Union of the Soviet Socialist Republics People's Commissariat of Defense. Early 1937 arrested by People's Commissariat of Internal Affairs organs.
His friend and brother-in-law Yakir pleaded for him before Stalin, but without results.
