Gaiduk attended Moscow Pedagogical Institute from 1980 until 1984. In 1987 he enrolled in the Russian Academy of Sciences of the Institute of World History. In 1990 he defended his thesis and received a Ph.D.
Gaiduk was a high school teacher in Moscow, Russia from 1984 until 1987. Thereafter he was junior research fellow of Russian Academy of Sciences of the Institute of World History, Moscow from 1990 until 1993, since 1993 he was research fellow. Ilya Gaiduk took an active part in maintaining international scientific ties: he collaborated for many years with the Woodrow Wilson Center, was repeatedly involved with the Kennan Institute and the International Project on Cold War history as a fellow, a visiting researcher and expert. In recent years, Gaiduk developed an interest in the history of the UN and its specialized organizations during the Cold War. Gaiduk died on September 5, 2011.
Gaiduk made a significant contribution to the study of the history of the Vietnam War, Soviet-American relations, Third World countries, and the UN during the Cold War. He wrote three monographs published in the United States: "The Great Confrontation: Europe and Islam through the Centuries", "Confronting Vietnam: Soviet Policy toward the Indochina Conflict, 1954-1963", "The Soviet Union and the Vietnam War", as well as dozens of articles in Russian and foreign languages.
He was a member of the International Scientific Committee of the "History of UNESCO", from its foundation (2006), and took an active part in organizing international conferences on the history of UNESCO within the framework of this project.
