Background
Inoue Jakichi was born in 1862. He was the second son of Takanori and a clansman of Tokushima.

Inoue Jakichi was sent by his clan to England for studies(1873).
Career
Returning home the following year was in turn employed at Tokyo University, teacher of English at 1st Higher School (1886), on the staff of Yokohama Gazette (1893), translator at Ministry of Foreign Affairs, 2nd Secretary of Japanese Legation in Belgium, then transferred to America (1897), resigned from office (1918) and devoted his time to compiling English-Japanese and Japanese-English dictionaries and also wrote books with a view to introducing things Japanese to the Western world.
