Iqbal Haji

Background

Iqbal Haji was born on 28 November 1940 in Dar es Salaam, United Republic of Tanzania. A multilingual professional with an international outlook, he speaks English, Gujarati, French, and Spanish.

Education

Haji received his higher education in the United Kingdom. He studied economics at the London School of Economics from 1963 to 1966, earning a Bachelor of Science degree. He continued his academic training at the University of Cambridge from 1981 to 1982, completing the Master of Philosophy (M.Phil.) program.

Career

Iqbal Haji has dedicated his professional life to international development and economic policy within the UN framework.

He began his career with the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) in Geneva, where he served as Economist and later Senior Economist, contributing to research and policy initiatives on global trade and development issues.

In 1983, Haji moved to New York to assume the position of Principal Officer in the Office of the Director-General for Development and International Economic Cooperation at the United Nations Headquarters. In this capacity, he has played a key role in economic analysis, intergovernmental coordination, and the development of strategies aimed at fostering international cooperation on economic growth and development.
