Irby Bruce Cauthen was born on August 24, 1919, in Rock Hill, South Carolina, United States. He was the son of Irby Bruce and Ruth (Kimbrell) Cauthen.
Irby received his bachelor's degree from Furman University, then attended the University of Virginia for his Masters beginning in 1942. His degree interrupted by World War II, where he served in the Army in North Africa and Italy, he returned and completed his Ph.D. in 1947.
Irby Cauthen began his career as assistant professor of English at Hollins College, Virginia, in 1951. He moved to the University of Virginia, Charlottesville, as an assistant professor in 1954, and was promoted to full professor of English in 1964. This position he held until his retirement in 1987.
His first book was Two Mementoes from the Poe-Ingram Collection (1971), followed by Edgar Allan Poe: A Bibliography of Criticism, 1827-1967 (1974). He also served as editor of Gorboduc, or Ferrex and Porrex (1970) and contributed to other anthologies, including The Dramatic Works in the Beaumont and Fletcher Canon, Analyzing Literary Works, and Dictionary of American Biography. He contributed numerous essays, articles, and reviews to the professional journals in his field.
Cauthen also served as Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences for many years, concluding his term in 1978.

1971Cauthen was a member of Phi Beta Kappa, the Raven Society, and Omicron Delta Kappa, Modern Language Association, and Bibliographical Society University Virginia.
Irby Cauthen married Elizabeth Bagby Greear on August 28, 1954. They had two sons: Irby Bruce III, James Noah Greear.
