Irina Tuszyńska is a Belarusian-born bioinformatician and research scientist whose work has addressed computational structural biology, protein–RNA and protein–nucleic-acid interactions, RNA and chromatin structure, genome organization, and computational approaches to drug discovery. She has worked in academic research and biotechnology in Poland.
Background
Irina Tuszyńska was born in Belarus on December 18, 1981. She subsequently developed her scientific career in Poland, where she pursued higher education and conducted research in computational biology, structural bioinformatics, and molecular modeling.
Education
Tuszyńska earned a Master of Science degree from Wrocław University of Technology, completing her studies on November 30, 2004. She later pursued doctoral research in structural bioinformatics at the Institute of Biochemistry and Biophysics of the Polish Academy of Sciences in Warsaw. Her doctoral thesis, “Prediction of protein-RNA complexes structure and interactions,” was defended on April 9, 2013, with the distinction magna cum laude under the supervision of Janusz M. Bujnicki. Her academic development also included scientific training in molecular dynamics at the Barcelona Biomedical Research Park and professional experience connected with computational modeling and drug development.
Career
Tuszyńska began her research career in the Laboratory of Bioinformatics and Protein Engineering at the International Institute of Molecular and Cell Biology in Warsaw, where she was listed as a doctoral student in 2007 and later worked as a junior researcher. Her research in this period focused on computational approaches to protein–RNA and protein–DNA interactions, molecular docking, structural modeling, and the development of statistical potentials and related bioinformatic tools. She completed her doctorate at the Institute of Biochemistry and Biophysics of the Polish Academy of Sciences in 2013 and continued at the International Institute of Molecular and Cell Biology as a junior researcher supported by ERC and National Science Centre grants. In 2015 she joined the University of Warsaw, where she worked in computational biology and regulatory genomics, applying simulation and statistical methods to chromatin structure, chromosome conformation, and genomic contact data. Her later scientific work extended into biotechnology and computational drug discovery. She was affiliated with Molecure S.A. in Warsaw, contributing to research on RNA structure, cancer biology, molecular mechanisms, and therapeutic discovery. She subsequently joined Sii Poland as a domain expert in life-sciences technology.
Membership
Tuszyńska participated in the Computational and Systems Biology Group at the University of Warsaw and worked within the Laboratory of Bioinformatics and Protein Engineering at the International Institute of Molecular and Cell Biology. She also served on the organization committee for the 2015 RECOMB conference in Warsaw.
Connections
Tuszyńska’s doctoral and early research work was closely associated with Janusz M. Bujnicki’s laboratory at the International Institute of Molecular and Cell Biology and the Institute of Biochemistry and Biophysics of the Polish Academy of Sciences. Her later research collaborations connected her with computational biology groups at the University of Warsaw and with scientists in biotechnology and molecular medicine.
