Sarason received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Rutgers University in 1951. Two years later he earned his Master of Science degree from the University of Iowa. In 1955, Irwin was given a Doctor of Philosophy degree from Indiana University.
Sarason began his career as an assistant professor of psychology at the University of Washington in 1956. Three years later he took a position of an associate professor of psychology at the same university. In 1965 Irwin became a professor of psychology at the University of Washington.
