In España: Six Album Leaves, Op. 165, Albéniz magically transports the listener to colorful locations, each with its own special Spanish flavor. These musical "postcards" are not particularly difficult to play, and are somewhere between the late intermediate and early advanced levels. This edition aids in interpretation through added fingerings, pedal and indications for subtle changes in tempo, which are integral to the performance of Spanish music. Dr. Kuehl-White studied in Barcelona with legendary Spanish pianist Alicia de Larrocha, who provided a tremendous legacy regarding the performance practice traditions of Albéniz's music. España was initially published with many errors and omissions. Over the years, editors have produced new editions with some corrections, but little interpretive assistance. This edition not only contains numerous corrections, but also aids in interpretation through various additions in the score. Titles: Prélude * Tango * Malagueña * Serenata * Capricho Catalán * Zortzico.

( Isaac Albéniz (18601909) began his musical life as a p...)
Isaac Albéniz (18601909) began his musical life as a piano prodigy in Barcelona at the age of four, and it is as a prolific composer of solo works for the pianoforte that we celebrate him most. This inexpensive Dover edition, designed to give you a lifetime of musical enjoyment, presents two of Albéniz's best-known works in authoritative editions: the piano suite Iberia, generally considered to be his masterpiece; and España, which contains the "Tango," his most popular individual work. Iberia is a collection of twelve musical scenes of Spanish life, principally Andalusian, written in the years from 1906 to 1909. Its brilliant and complex character is suffused with the rhythms and harmonies of Spanish popular music, to which Albéniz turned for inspiration in the last years of his life. España, an earlier work first published in 1890, is made up of six piano pieces that subtly reflect the influences of the piano literature of the nineteenth-century salon and like Iberia the harmony and style of impressionism, which Albéniz himself helped to create. Both works reveal characteristics of the highly individualized piano technique Albéniz developed from early childhood and perfected under the tutelage of Liszt.

Isaac Albéniz was born Isaac Manuel Francisco Albéniz on May 29, 1860, in Camprodón, Catalonia, Spain.
A child prodigy, Albéniz made his first concert appearance in Barcelona at the age of four and at seven was refused admittance to the Paris Conservatory because of his youth. His first composition was a marche militaire, and at ten he was performing solo recitals throughout Spain. Albéniz international concert career included a recital in April 1889 which inaugurated the Salle Erard in Paris. He spent three years in London (1890 - 1893), where he presented his operetta, The Magic Opal (1893). In 1893 he returned to Paris and remained there to the end of his life, except for occasional visits to Spain. He taught at the Schola Cantorum (1897 - 1898) and was known as a disciple of César Franck, Vincent d'Indy, Gabriel Fauré, and Claude Debussy. Albéniz' two operas, San Antonio de la Florida (1894) and Pepita Jiménez (1896), mark the full development of his Hispanic style. His work, strongly influenced by folk music, foreshadows the modern Spanish composition of Enrique Granados, Manuel de Falla, and Joaquín Rodrigo. Albéniz' last important works were Cataluña, an orchestral piece (1899), and Ibéria, a composition for piano (1906 - 1909). He died May 18, 1909, at Cambo-les-Bains (Basses-Pyrenées), (Basses-Pyrenees), France.
