Background
Isshinsai Hagai was born in Hagai, Uzen (Akita Prefecture) about 1630.

He practised swordsmanship of the Shinkage School under Kyodayu Yoshioka and served the Lord of Yamagata. He deserted his clan, after killing a chief retainer, Mimbu Mogami, and opened a fencing school at Iijima, Bitchu Province (Okayama Prefecture). Among his many disciples, Munefuyu (Hidanokami) Yagyu was the most distinguished. It is said that Isshinsai fought Banzo Isohata in a tournament in the presence of the Shogun, Iemitsu Tokugawa.
