Ittosai Ito was born about 1560 in Ito, Izu Peninsula, originally named Kagehisa and also known as Yagoro.
He learnt the art of fencing from Jisai Kanemaki and then originated his Ittoryu school.
He travelled throughout Japan for bouts with other masters. It is said he had 33 duels and never lost once. Later he taught his secrets to his disciple, Tenzen Mikogami, after which he turned priest and set forth on a preaching tour of the country.
